Duty Disability Benefit

Amount:

Peron's eligible may qualify for 75% of salary at date of injury - OR -- If disability, in any measure, resulted from any physical defect or disease which existed at the time injury was sustained, then 50% of salary at the date of injury.

Child Benefit:

A member who is entitled to receive duty disability benefit is also entitled to receive an amount (commonly called "child’s disability benefit") of $10 a month with respect to each unmarried child less than age 18; provided that, the total amount of the child’s disability benefit is not to exceed 15% of such member’s salary.
 

Maximum Time Period:

No general time limitation except -- (a) if the disability commences prior to age 60, payable during disability until the employee attains age 65 or, (b) if disability commences after age 60, the benefit is payable during disability for a period of five years.
 

Applicant Must File Timely Workers’ Compensation Claim:

Before any action may be taken by the Board on an application for Duty Disability, other than rejection of any incomplete or untimely application, the applicant must file a timely claim under the Workers' Compensation Act [820 ILCS 305/1 et seq.] or the Workers' Occupational Diseases Act [820 ILCS 310/1 et seq.], as applicable, to establish that the disability resulted from an injury incurred in the performance of an act or acts of duty, and the applicant must receive compensation or payment from the claim or the claim must otherwise be finally adjudicated.

Ordinary Disability Benefit

Amount:

Peron's eligible may qualify for 50% of salary at date of disability.
 

Maximum Time Period:

In general, eligible members are entitled to Ordinary Disability benefits for a time period equal to 1/4 of the total service rendered prior to the date of disability but in no event more than 5 years.  No member is eligible to receive Ordinary Disability benefits for more than 5 years cumulatively.
 

Application Timing:

The benefit period will NOT include any period of disability that is more than 30 days prior to the application date, unless the Board finds reasonable cause for delay in filing the application.  You must file for Ordinary Disability while you are disabled.
 

Special "Service" Limitations:

Disability must NOT have commenced during any "absence from duty" other than paid vacation.

An employee who has withdrawn from service or was laid off for any reason, who is absent from service thereafter for 60 days or more, who re-enters the service subsequent to such absence is not entitled to Ordinary Disability unless he/she renders at least 6 months of service subsequent to the date of such last re-entry.
