Disability Benefits - At A Glance
The Retirement Board of the Cook County Pension Fund (the Fund) administers the disability benefits provided for in Article 9 of the Illinois Pension Code.
The disability benefit is designed to provide compensation, in replacement of salary, for those injured or suffering from an illness that prevents them from working. As an employee of Cook County or the Forest Preserve District, you are entitled to apply for and, if eligible, receive these benefits.
There are two types of disability benefits - (1) Duty Disability Benefits and (2) Ordinary Disability Benefits.
Duty Disability
Duty Disability Benefits are available only to employees who are disabled as a result of an injury or illness "incurred in the performance of an act or acts of duty".
Ordinary Disability
Ordinary Disability Benefits [non-duty] are available to those employees who are disabled "as a result of any cause other than injury or illness incurred in the performance of an act of duty".
For a comprehensive review of the administrative and eligibility rules associated with this benefit, please refer to the Disability Benefit Handbook.
