The Retirement Board of the Cook County Pension Fund (the Fund) administers the disability benefits provided for in Article 9 of the Illinois Pension Code.

The Fund provides two types of disability benefit to participants - (1) Duty Disability Benefit and (2) Ordinary Disability Benefit. Important Note: Participants must be employees at the time of application AND are entitled to the benefit only for so long as they remain employees.

Duty Disability Per statute, benefits are available ONLY to employees who are disabled as the result of an injury incurred in the performance of an act or acts of duty. [40 ILCS 5/9-156] "Injury" is defined as a "physical hurt resulting from external force or violence." [40 ILCS 5/9-114]

Ordinary Disability Per statute, benefits are available to those employees who are disabled "as the result of any cause other than injury incurred in the performance of an act of duty". [see 40 ILCS 5/9-157]
